It’s an inspiring story without being precious or sentimental. It’s more that Jimmy gets his shot–the chance to succeed or fail on his own merits. I listened to this book. And so they don’t dream. The writing was so visual and so sensitive and so beautiful. Loved, loved, loved this book.

Gives great snapshot of the world of poverty and challenges faced to ever succeed. Despite all of this, Jimmy finds a way out via brains, physical strength and the goodwill of a special teacher.

If you’ve ever spent time in Southern Ohio you will recognize it in the pages of this book. The name Hickam alone means dirt poor and, by association, somehow dirty or unworthy. No one expects much of him with his violent father, good-for-nothing brothers, and a worn down mother who can’t quite find the strength to support her youngest child.
His father is a drunk, his two older brothers include a convict and a carnie, and his mother struggles in her position.

His family’s reputation is so awful that he has just given up on ever trying to be any different from the youm, until The characters, the setting, and the events all ring so true that it feels autobiographical to me.
